Top Ten Reasons Not to Buy Plywood

TOP 10 REASONS NOT TO USE PLYWOOD TO PROTECT YOUR HOME DURING HURRICANES1.Plywood repeatedly fails the Large Missile Impact Test. To read the full page report of several types of impact tests on plywood go here!

.Need 2 people to put it up. You need the help of your least favorite neighbor.

.Not reusable year after year. Plywood warps, OSB falls apart; neither is waterproof.

.Long lines at Home Depot/Lowe’s. Plywood is in short supply when a hurricane is coming and lines are long at home improvement stores.

.Holes in your home’s exterior. Screwing or nailing plywood over window openings puts permanent holes in your house. If a bad paint job can allow water to penetrate the concrete of a home, what will permanent holes do?

.Doesn’t let in any light. Plywood on your windows makes you feel like you are living in a cave.

.Dangerous! Cannot be removed from the inside in the event of an emergency. With plywood screwed or nailed to the outside of your home, it is impossible to get out in the event of an emergency. In September of 2004, a man and his 4 children died in a fire in Homestead, FL. The headline in the paper read, “Plywood Shutters Trap Blaze.”

.Very heavy. A sheet of plywood (1/2”-3/4”) weighs 60 to 90 lbs. Could a woman or the elderly lift it by themselves?

.Hazardous to your health. Lifting, cutting & installing plywood are dangerous endeavors. You could strain your back or neck lifting it, cut off a finger with a circular saw or fall off a roof or ladder struggling to get it in place.

.Plywood attracts termites. Florida has enough termites; we don’t need any more.
